Dangerous Catch (Pd 3) “Our massive demands on the ocean’s bounty impacts life far beyond the shoreline: bushmeat hunting is on the rise in Ghana while in Namibia; fishing grounds struggle to recover as putrid fumes explode from the ocean depths and poison the waters; and radical new fish farms are sprouting up from Puerto Rico to Canada. Across the globe, all life is feeling the effects of overfishing. Can we protect fish in time to safeguard the ocean, life on land and ultimately ourselves? Find out how we all can make a difference.”

Why Should We Care? -Tasty Fish We should care because; our fisheries are killing too many large predators. Most of those predators control the population of the rest of the food chain. For example, in the article, it explains how we are killing too many sharks. These sharks control the population of other predators. Those smaller predators control the population of even smaller fish. With the fisheries over fishing, the prey’s population escalates dramatically. All these factors create an environment where the only algae and jellyfish can live. -Recreational Opportunities Fun activities like scuba diving or whale watching will not be the same without fish. Many recreational activities like these are becoming less popular due to the decrease in fish population. Though scuba diving and whale watching is becoming less popular, recreational fishing is increasing rapidly with about 10 million saltwater fishermen in the United States. There are too many fishermen which is leading to the lack of fish. Recreational opportunities are being diminished for such reasons. -Sources of Medicine Doctors and Scientists are discovering useful chemicals such as fish slime, oil, and venom. Without the biodiversity we have now, these healing chemicals won’t be available. The US National Cancer Institute collects more than 1,000 of these possible beneficial chemicals every year. Most of the sources of these chemicals haven’t been discovered yet. -Environmental Health Indicators Many fish or other marine animals act as bioindicators, animals that are sensitive to changes in an environment. Without the diverse species of fish, we don’t have the ability to test an area for low oxygen or other unhealthy problems. Too many Dissolved Nutrients cause Dead Zones, or an environment that can no longer sustain marine life. Seaweed and Sea Grasses help remove harmful chemicals or other dissolved nutrients in the water to support a healthier environment. -Coral Reef Alliance
The Coral Reef Alliance is trying to get lots of people and communities to help participate in protecting coral reefs all over the world. They are trying to form alliances, share with nearby communities, create jobs for business, and reduce local threats. Their main goal is to create a sustainable place where fish can live.
Scientists say that we will need to protect the reefs for 10 years until the health and stability of coral reefs improve.
